Oct. 16-22: Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

In boys water polo, Newport Harbor High takes down rival Corona del

Mar, 8-5. The Sailors’ Chris Richardson scores four goals, while Mike

Peetz gets three. Alex Batley scores three for the Sea Kings.

The Costa Mesa boys water polo team romps past Estancia, 19-8. Mesa’s

Sean Hylton scores five goals as six other Mustangs also get on the

scoreboard, including Robert Grayeli, James Comfort and Roger Kirnos, all

with three goals apiece.

CdM’s football team comes up a little short and loses, 40-35, to El

Toro. Sea Kings senior Josh Walz, who passes for 177 yards and rushes for

74 more, is involved in all five touchdowns. He connects with Tyler

Stonebreaker for a 7-yard touchdown with 3:05 remaining, but CdM cannot

complete the comeback.

Newport Harbor’s football team comes back from a 24-7 halftime

deficit, but loses, 31-28, to Irvine. The Sailors’ Chris Morrell has 13

carries for 79 yards with three touchdowns. His scoring runs come in the

second half as Harbor takes a 28-24 lead only to see it crumble.

CdM’s boys cross country finishes fifth at the Mt. SAC Invitational.

The Sea Kings’ Tyler Beardslee runs a 16:25 to finish 17th overall.

Mesa’s Zeke Noonan runs a 15:59 to lead the Mustangs to a 27-29

victory over University. Bruce Hancock comes in at 16:37 to help the

winning cause.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

Newport Harbor’s football team defeats University, 21-7. The Sailors rebound from their loss the previous week to Back Bay rival CdM. Harbor

quarterback Steve Walker completes 6 of 9 for 73 yards and two

touchdowns. Sailors running back Russell Olshefski carries 15 times for

85 yards and a touchdown.

Estancia’s football team wins a 21-20 thriller over Laguna Beach. The

Eagles defense stops a two-point conversion for the win. Estancia leads

the game, 21-6, entering the fourth quarter. Eagles fullback Bill Sandro

goes for 30 carries, 139 yards and one touchdown. David Hong chips in

with nine carries for 71 yards.

CdM and Woodbridge battle to a 27-27 tie in football. CdM’s Todd

Kehrli finds Steve Bacon for a 31-yard touchdown to grab the lead, 27-24.

The Sea Kings’ PAT goes wide and the Warriors come back with a field

goal. Later in the week, Kehrli is our for the season because of a freak

accident when he slices his little finger on his throwing hand while

cutting a steak at a barbecue.

Newport Harbor’s boys volleyball wins its 10th straight match with a

13-6 victory over Sunny Hills. The Sailors’ Rich Ruffini scores four

goals and Ty Lunde gets three as the win catapults Harbor to a No. 2

ranking in CIF 4-A.

CdM’s girls volleyball, top-ranked in the CIF 5-A division, defeats

second-ranked Laguna Beach, 15-11, 15-1, 15-4. Tracy Schriber leads the

Sea Kings with 11 kills, while Lara Carlsen goes for six kills, 10 blocks

and two aces.
