Two of the top teams in Orange County go head to head in girls

volleyball as Newport Harbor hosts Irvine today at 3:15 p.m. in a crucial

Sea View League matchup.

The Sailors (9-5, 3-1 in league), ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section

Division I-A, trail the No. 2 ranked Vaqueros (8-1, 4-0) by one game in

the Sea View League.

The Sailors’ lone loss in league came at the hands of the Vaqueros on

Oct. 2 with a 15-3, 15-6, 15-8 pounding.

It was the first league loss for the Sailors since 1995, when they

fell victim to Santa Margarita in the ninth match of the season.

Newport had more return errors (21) than kills (15) in that match,

which has to drastically change if a victory over Irvine is possible.

Since that setback, Newport improved its play, winning eight of its

last nine matches and with today’s match at the Sailors’ gym, a much

closer matchup should take place.

Elsewhere today:

The Newport Harbor field hockey team takes another step toward the

Sunset League title with a 3:15 matchup against Edison at the Harper

Community Center in Costa Mesa.

A win over the Chargers would make it nearly impossible for the

Sailors (16-1-1, 11-0) not to win the Sunset League with only two league

games to follow.

Newport’s girls tennis team (9-4, 4-1), ranked No. 2 in Division III

will play at Laguna Hills, Division III’s third-ranked team, at 3:15.

Corona del Mar’s girls tennis team (14-2, 6-0), No. 3 in Division IV,

will compete at Northwood at 3:15.

Also in girls tennis, Estancia will host Laguna Beach, while Costa

Mesa hosts University. Both matches begin at 3:15.

Newport Harbor’s girls golf team will travel up north to compete in

the San Jose Tournament. The first round takes place at the Villages Golf

Course at 1 p.m. while the second round will be held Friday at the

world-famous Spyglass Golf Course.

Corona del Mar girls golf team will compete against Estancia at the

Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club’s Mesa Linda course for a 2:30 Pacific

Coast League matchup.

Costa Mesa’s girls golf team will take on Oakwood at Oak Creek Golf

Club at 3:30.
