What type of individuals running for public office does Huntington

Beach sorely need in this election? Huntington Beach needs longtime

community residents, taxpayers who have seen the city rise up from “tin

can” beach status to what it is now -- an overdeveloped, victim of

upstream polluters and gridlocked traffic patterns.

We need independent thinkers; people who have demonstrated courage,

foresight, vision and passion for a cause that would improve the city’s

quality of life. The candidates must not be hampered by their ongoing

employment. They must be free of constraints in time and energy, their

agendas must be out there for all to see. They must be able to stand up

to the “powers.”

For Huntington Beach City Council, we need Debbie Cook and Connie

Boardman. For Ocean View School District Board of Trustees, Barbara

Boskovich is the perfect candidate. Her ethics, integrity, common-sense

vision is stamped on her forehead. She is a retired businesswoman who

can, and will, devote all the time required by a trustee. Huntington

Beach voters, let us get smart this time.

Recall effort clouded by mudslingingAnd the band played on, or

should I say the bashing of Dave Garofalo continues? Sandra Cole,

assuming the role of arresting officer, judge and jury has initiated a

“notice of intent” to recall our mayor before the results of three

ongoing investigations are finalized (“Residents move to recall

Garofalo,” Oct. 19).

Why does she distrust our democratic system to such an extent that she

intends to ignore them and put Huntington Beach through another

signature-gathering and, if successful, a special election? After all,

Garofalo was just one of four who had the fortitude to aid the Ocean View

School District in approving a Wal-Mart on a long-abandoned and

dilapidated school site. Could Sandra Cole possibly be using this farce

to discredit Bill Borden and Pam Julien, the victors in the Wal-Mart

issue, and give Debbie Cook and perhaps even Connie Boardman, the losers

in the Wal-Mart issue, the boost they sorely need in the forthcoming

election?

It sure has a political odor that extends beyond any crusade Sandra

Cole has been on for so many years. Why is it the ground gets so muddy

just before election, even after a long drought?

Julien’s Bolsa Chica record doesn’t cut it

Now that the election is upon us, we are receiving mailers from

candidates promoting their positions. As I was reading [Huntington Beach

Councilwoman] Pam Julien’s pamphlet, it states, “Protect and Preserve

Bolsa Chica mesa.” I was appalled.

Julien has never acted to promote preserving the Bolsa Chica mesa. Her

sole reason for stating that in her campaign pamphlet is because she

knows that this community supports preserving the Bolsa Chica mesa.

Credibility is an issue in this campaign.

Julien is nothing but an opportunist and sadly a politician that cares

little for telling the truth about her positions.

Conlosh should do his homework

At a recent candidates forum, Councilman Chuck Conlosh took issue with

the Fountain Valley city attorney’s salary. Conlosh has been voting on

city budgets for four years. It seems odd that a few weeks before the

elections,, he has just now discovered what one of the city’s top

employees is paid.

But why wasn’t Conlosh asking these questions during budget votes? I

don’t believe the city benefits when he shoots from the hip without doing

his homework and checking out the facts.

McCurdy listens to residents’ concerns

As longtime Fountain Valley residents and concerned citizens, we would

like to voice our opinion and safety concern on the parking and storage

of motor homes and boats on city streets.

The difficulty lies in the fact that the view is blocked from oncoming

traffic because of these large vehicles. This is most hazardous for

everyone, especially children crossing and cars entering the

intersections. We have had many, many occasions where we have witnessed

near-accidents.

We will be casting our vote for Mark McCurdy for Fountain Valley City

Council in November. He has pledged his attention to this problem and has

seen and listened to our concerns.

Bissell is a ‘friend for life’

I started walking with Bonnie Bissell three years ago -- in training

for the first Avon-3 Day (“A lasting impression,” Oct. 5). We trained

together and became friends. You get to know a lot about people when you

have a common cause and spend lots and lots of time -- walking and

talking -- and I can truly say Bonnie is a friend for life. Thank you for

your support.
