Justin Kao of Huntington Beach completed work at Caltech as part of a
group of undergraduate students who performed scientific research as part
of the school’s summer undergraduate research fellowships program. Kao
spent 10 weeks on the Camera-Based Obstacle Detection for Planetary
Rovers on Challenging Terrains research project.
Gibbons receives distinction award
William Gibbons, a history teacher at Ocean View High School, has been
named a 2000 Coca-Cola Educator of Distinction, an honor that recognizes
outstanding teachers dedicated to providing education with an enhanced
purpose.
Patriotism contests seek participants
The Fountain Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9557 and its Ladies
Auxiliary are sponsoring several contests for local students.
High school students can enter the 23rd annual Young American Creative
Patriotic Art Contest, sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary and the Veterans
of Foreign Wars of the United States. The deadline is Dec. 15.
High school students can also enter the 54th annual audio essay
contest, the Voice of Democracy Scholarship. Interested students can
write and record a three- to five-minute audio essay expressing their
view of the patriotic theme “What Price Freedom?” All state winners will
receive a $1,000 scholarship and will then compete for a $25,000
first-place award. The deadline is Nov. 1.

Elementary school students may enter an essay competition. This year’s
theme is “What Does it Mean to be Patriotic?”
The top national award is a $10,000 U.S. Saving Bond. Entry forms must
be completed by Dec. 1.

Mimi’s sponsors Thanksgiving writing contest
Elementary school students in Huntington Beach may take part in Mimi’s
Cafe’s seventh annual Write Stuff essay contest. This year’s contest
theme is “What I Have to be Thankful for.”
Essays must be no more than one page, and only one submission per
student will be accepted. The deadline is Nov. 8. Please write to: The

Pueblo potters focus of exhibit
Golden West College is offering a new exhibit in the Fine Arts
Gallery. Photographer Neil Chapman highlights the Santa Clara Pueblo
Potters and their pottery. The photographs depict landscapes and
abstractions that have evolved into portraits that are primarily in black
and white, natural light and large- and medium-format cameras.
The exhibit will continue through Nov. 17 in the Fine Arts Gallery,
15744 Goldenwest St. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday
through Friday and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
