New Surf City fire station to open

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- It’s the newest and largest fire station in the

city, and it didn’t cost the taxpayers a penny.

Fire Station No. 6, at 18591 Edwards St., will open its doors this

weekend and offer tours to residents.

“We’re really happy about how this worked out,” said Martha Werth,

spokeswoman for the Huntington Beach Fire Department. “The entire project

was funded by the PLC Land Corp. as part of the Holly Seacliff

Development Agreement in 1991.”

The 13,000-square-foot, $3.5-million station makes the city’s eighth

facility for firefighters, and the first new addition to the city’s Fire

Department since 1981.

Fire Department Operations Chief Chuck Reynolds said developers and

fire officials took special care to listen to residents’ concerns during

three community meetings and have planted trees to screen nearby homes

from flashing lights and taken measures to eliminate the need to use

sirens in the area or use loudspeakers outside after dusk.

A dedication ceremony will be held Friday for city and fire officials,

and the station will be open between 1 and 5 p.m. this weekend for

residents.
