THE RACE FOR HUNTINGTON BEACH CITY COUNCIL
Tariq Malik
This is not the first time Tom Doney has run for office. The campaign
veteran has run for City Council seats in the past three elections. He’s
hoping the fourth time will be a charm.
He has also served with a number of community groups, including the
Chamber of Commerce, the Bolsa Chica Alliance and the Fourth of July
board.
The largest challenge facing the city today is its beaches, Doney
said.
“We need to publicize the fact that our beaches are cleaner now than
they have been in the last 30 years,” he added.
Changes in state law over the definition of clean water were the
culprit behind beach closures last year, not pollution or bacteria, Doney
said. Until the city can get that word out, Huntington Beach will still
be associated with polluted beaches, he added.

THOMAS DONEY ON:
* REDEVELOPMENT
The city needs to continue its efforts to improve the Downtown area,
Doney said.
“It’s also time to stop talking and take action on the Huntington
Beach mall,” he said, referring to ongoing debates over turning it into a
new retail and restaurant destination called The Crossings at Huntington.
The city also needs to closely follow all state- and federally
mandated affordable housing programs to provide for residents, Doney
added.
* THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING THE CITY
Doney said there are three issues that will be key for the city in the
next few years.
Repairing the city’s infrastructure, including sewer and other
services; developing new sources of revenue; and keeping a qualified
Police Department in the city are all imperative, he said.
