ON THE ISSUES

* REPUBLICANS AND ORANGE COUNTY VOTERS

“The Republican party has left them. It’s gone way over to the right.

Our Democratic policies and philosophies are more in tune with most of

the citizens here than most of the Republican policies,” he said.

* ENVIRONMENT

He argues that state and federal funding needs to be brought to bear

on Orange County environmental issues and that developers should be made

to pay for helping clean up such problems as faulty sewage treatment.

Otherwise, he said, “the homeowners are going to get hit with it.”

* HEALTH CARE

He is in favor of a more comprehensive health care system to protect

people without insurance. Argues that “portability of coverage” -- which

would make it possible to retain coverage between jobs -- should be a

priority. “The Republican attitude is, ‘Hey, everyone’s on their own,”’

he said.

* PUBLIC TRANSIT

He calls Southern California’s system of public transportation

“totally inadequate” and would push for more funding of possibilities

such as light rail systems.
