Behind the efforts of running back William League, the Orange Coast

College football team squeaks past Fullerton, 27-23. League moves into

fifth-plae in OCC’s all-time single game rushing list as he runs for 225

yards on 26 carries and three touchdowns.

Geoff Abrams, of Newport Harbor High and a former national champion in

the boys tennis 14s, signs a letter of intent with Stanford. Abrams, who

dreamed of going to Stanford since he was a child, verbally commits to

the Cardinal’s coach Dick Gould the day before signing.

Newport Harbor’s girls volleyball team shells visiting Royal High of

Simi Valley, 15-6, 15-3, 16-14, in the first round of the CIF Division I

playoffs. Jennifer Carey punches a solo block and then a kill for the

last two points in the third game. She finishes with six kills, two

blocks and four digs. Julie Hecker has nine kills, nine digs and two

aces.

Harbor boys water polo coasts to a 16-5 victory over Mission Viejo in

the first round of the CIF Division I playoffs. Mike Peetz leads with

five goals. Cole Lunde scores three. And John Jones snags six steals.

Costa Mesa High’s water polo team, the top seed in CIF Southern

Section Division II, thumps visiting Buena Park, 21-7, in the opening

round of the playoffs. Robert Grayeli and Chad Cleaver lead the Mustangs

with three goals apiece.

The Corona del Mar High football strikes for a 22 second-half points

for a 29-22 victory over Irvine. Quarterback Josh Walz throws for 139

yards on 8 of 12 passing and has a 14-yard touchdown run. Tom O’Meara

runs for 102 yards on 22 carries and scores twice.

Estancia High’s Bachy Gonzalez runs wild, scores three touchdowns,

collects 183 yards and breaks 23-year-old record of Dan Princetto with

new single season standard of 1,197 yards as the Eagles shut out Laguna

Beach, 47-0.

Looking back 10 year ago, this week

The Corona del Mar High football team comes back from a 13-0 halftime

deficit to defeat University, 17-13. The win puts CdM back into the CIF

Division VI playoffs to defend its crown. George Dickson catches a pass

that tips off of Steve Bacon from quarterback Chad Woolsey for a 9-yard

touchdown pass with 6:07 remaining for the eventual victory.

The Costa Mesa High football team defeats Trabuco Hills, 16-13, and

claims a CIF Division VII playoff berth. Jermaine Jackson runs for 117

yards on 16 carries and one touchdown. Ryan Park and Fernando Ospina team

to tackle Trabuco Hills running back Ben Rooker in the end zone for a

safety and a 16-7 advantage.

Newport Harbor High’s football team roars into the CIF playoffs with a

42-14 rout over Saddleback. Quarterback Steve Walker throws for a

touchdown in the Sailors’ dominating performance over the Roadrunners.

Harbor running back Brandon Finney scores two 1-yard touchdowns.

Orange Coast College’s kicker Mike Wade nails a 51-yard field goal

with 48 seconds remaining as the Bucs capture a 13-12 Mission Conference

victory over Riverside. Wade’s kick is the longest in school history. OCC

running back Adrain Steen runs for 143 yards on 29 carries and one

touchdown.

CdM’s cross country boys team advances to the CIF Southern Section

Cross Country Finals after a second-place finish in the Prelims. Sea King

freshman Tim Timmon finishes with a personal best 17:45. Mike Marumoto

(16:51) grabs fifth place and Jack Hogan (17:21) earns 11th.

An oddity -- CdM’s boys water team becomes the wild card in the CIF

4-A playoffs after a coin flip. The Sea Kings are champions four of the

past five years, but are the wild card in 1990 because they played one

too many games in a Northern California tournament and were forced to

forfeit a Sea View League win and a three-way share of the league

championship.
