Girls volleyball: CdM earns No. 3 seed
CERRITOS - The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team opens the
CIF Southern Section Division III-AA playoffs as the No. 3 seed Thursday
at 7 p.m. against visiting San Dimas.
Newport Harbor, which for the first time in eight seasons did not earn
at least a share of the Sea View League championship, hosts University in
Tuesday’s Division I first round.
Coach Dan Glenn’s Sailors (14-9), which won the last three Division
I-AA titles, are now prohibited by section rules from playing outside
their enrollment division (I-A). The Sailors are also two-time defending
Division I state champions. They capped their regular season Friday with
a four-game win over CdM, sweeping the season series with their Back Bay
rival, 2-0.
Coach Steve Conti’s Sea Kings (16-8, 9-1) advanced to the section
semifinals in Division III-AA last fall, losing to Harvard-Westlake, this
year’s No. 1 seed and by far the class of the division, according to
Conti.
If victorious, Harbor would play the Hart-Thousand Oaks winner
Thursday.
With a win, CdM would meet either Nordhoff or Santa Ynez in Saturday’s
quarterfinal.
