Bay Club bulldozed

It was not the end of an era, but the beginning of a new one Monday as

part of the historic Balboa Bay Club was demolished as part of a

much-needed renovation project.

The Bay Club, which opened in 1948 and was made famous by its movie

star patrons, will see changes to more than just its image.

Bulldozers rolled into the building to begin construction that will

open parts of the swanky club -- once frequented by Frank Sinatra and

Humphrey Bogart -- to the public.

The multimillion-dollar remodeling of the storied Bay Club is expected

to be complete in 2003, according to estimates provided by project

management. For the most part, the club will remain open throughout

construction, although certain sections will be affected as work

progresses.

Renovation plans have been in the works for more than 10 years. The

improvements include expanding the club facilities and updating its look,

as well as providing public access.

Adding public access to the facilities is a term in the lease for the

privately owned club; its site off Coast Highway is owned by the city of

Newport Beach.

When the project is completed, it will be the first time the

waterfront property will be open to the public.
