Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

The Corona del Mar High football team just misses on its upset bid

over Servite and loses, 21-16. The Friars get a lucky break when the Sea

Kings fumble at the Servite 2-yard line and the Friars recover to hold on

and advance to the CIF Division V Final. The fumble is one of three CdM

turnovers and causes Tom O’Meara’s performance to go without reward. The

running back churns for 133 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries. Sea

King quarterback Josh Walz scampers for 84 yards on eight carries.

Costa Mesa’s Koo Kim and Chanel Anderson score 17 points each to lead

the Mustangs’ girls basketball team to a 77-31 season-opening victory

over Santa Ana Valley. Kim also dishes out 11 assists, snags six steals

and grabs six rebounds.

CdM’s girls basketball team opens its season with a 55-50 overtime

victory over Pacifica. Brittany Simon’s offensive rebound in the final

seconds sets up Lindsay Warmington’s game-tying three-pointer and the Sea

Kings score eight unanswered overtime points to break a 47-47 tie.

Warmington leads CdM with 14 points.

Newport Harbor twins Jeannette and Julia Hecker earn first-team

All-CIF Southern Section honors in girls volleyball. And, a surprise to

many, CdM All-American Kelly Campbell is named to the second team.

Newport Harbor’s soccer team opens its season with a 6-0 victory over

Ocean View as Justin Kerr scores a hat trick. The Tars outshoot Ocean

View, 20-0. Ryan Yurada, Garrett Jansma and Chris Wakim score one goal

each.

Estancia’s boys basketball team scores a 49-31 win over Verdugo Hills

to open the season in the Daily Pilot Tip-off Classic. Chris Candlish,

Estancia’s 6-foot-6 center, scores a game-high 18 points, grabs seven

rebounds and rejects two shots.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team finishes the year 28-1

and claims the CIF State Division I championship with a 15-3, 15-5,

11-15, 15-8 victory over St. Francis of Mountain View. It is CdM’s second

state crown. Lara Carlsen, the CIF Southern Section Player of the Year,

has a team-high 16 kills and seven blocks. To get to the finals, the Sea

Kings strike with vengeance for a 15-3, 15-11, 12-15, 15-8 victory over

Lynbrook of San Jose. CdM loses to San Jose the previous year, but the

1990 semifinal is a different story. The Sea Kings maintain their

26-match unbeaten streak as Carlsen has 12 kills, three blocks and five

aces, Tahlia Wagner has 10 kills and two blocks, Tracy Schriber adds 10

kills.

Prentice Perkins has four kills, two aces and two blocks.

Estancia’s Mike Haas drops in 26 points to lead the Eagles boys

basketball team to a 75-47 victory over Brea Olinda. Haas is s 5 for 9

from three-point range. Son Ly scores 11 for Estancia.

Newport Harbor’s boys basketball team shuts out Bellflower in the

first quarter and coasts to a 72-50 win. Justin McIntee scores 24 points

and Huy Nguyen adds 12 points and four assists.

The Orange Coast College football team loses, 23-20, to El Camino in

the Orange County Bowl. OCC kicker Mike Wade is wide left on a 37-yard

field-goal attempt to tie the score with 54 seconds left in the game. It

is the Pirates’ first bowl appearance since 1975. Tight end Derek Whiddon

catches eight passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Newport Harbor’s boys basketball team takes down Costa Mesa, 81-48, in

the first round of the Daily Pilot Tip-off Classic. The Sailors’ Billy

Nguyen scores a game-high 29 points. Huy Nguyen (14) and Justin McIntee

(13) also score in double figures. Jeff Pickens scores 17 to lead the

Mustangs.
