Kathie Thayer, won the reserve world champion junior reining title while

Rina Campbell has been appointed the new director of youth ministry

relations for Vanguard University of Southern California in Costa Mesa.

She replaced Misty Dameron, who has accepted a position with the School

for Professional Studies at the university’s Bakersfield extension

campus. Campbell is a 1998 graduate of Vanguard University, with a

bachelor’s degree in religion and a concentration in educational

ministries. Her duties now will include overseeing two touring drama

teams, acting as a liaison between youth pastors and the school, and work

in public relations. ... Navy Ensign Shelley D. Caplan, daughter of

Newport Beach residents Leslie and Marshall Caplan, recently received her

commission as a naval officer after completing Officer Candidate School

at Naval Aviation Schools Command, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla.

During a 13-week training program, she was instructed in various

subjects, including navigation, ship handling, engineering, naval warfare

and management. Her daily physical fitness program involved running,

swimming and calisthenics. ... Bob Zemel, vice president of public

affairs for Newport Beach-based Fidelity National Financial, Inc., was

recently named to the board of directors for the Building Industry Assn.

Costa Mesa Senior Center recently launched its 2000-01 annual

independent nonprofit center supports the daily living needs of more than

350 senior citizens. ... Marine Corps Pvt. Erik J. Mundell, son of

Newport Beach resident James G. Mundell, recently completed the motor

vehicle operator course at Marine Corps Detachment, Fort Leonard Wood,

Mo. He learned how to operate light and medium tactical wheeled vehicles

during field and convoy operations. Mundell spent more than 1,800 hours

of classroom instruction and practical application learning how to drive

designated courses on and off road, and other skills.
