CORONA DEL MAR - The Corona del Mar High girls water polo team

needed an extra seven minutes to kick-start its offense against visiting

Villa Park, but still pulled out an 8-5 nonleague win Friday.

Failing to reach the scoreboard after one quarter of play, the Sea

Kings (2-0) responded with four straight goals and never looked back.

Sophomore Danielle Carlson scored five goals to lead all scorers,

while teammate senior Lindsey Daley chipped in with two two goals and

sophomore Brittany Bowlus added a single tally.

The Spartans were led offensively by Cindy Henn, who scored three

goals.

Henn’s first goal of the game came nearly four minutes into the

contest, giving Villa Park (1-1) a 1-0 advantage.

Corona del Mar finally got on the board and tied the game with a

Carlson goal a minute and a half into the second quarter.

With just under two minutes remaining, CdM counterattacked off a Villa

Park offensive foul and Carlson marched down the middle and fired a shot

into the upper-right corner of the goal, giving the Sea Kings the lead

for good.

Goalie Jessica Wells came up with 10 saves, including denying a

nicely-placed lob shot at the end of the first half.

Daley and Bowlus got into the scoring act early in the third quarter

as CdM’s lead grew to 4-1.

Villa Park scored twice in the third, but Carlson matched the Spartans

with two third-quarter goals, keeping CdM’s lead in tact.

CdM extended its lead to 8-3 in the fourth quarter off of goals by

Carlson and Daley, before Villa Park tightened the score with two late

goals.

The Sea Kings will continue nonleague action Tuesday against Peninsula

at 3:15 p.m.
