Estancia High’s Dane Plock is the MVP of the Daily Pilot Tip-off

Classic as he scores 23 points to lead to a 70-66 championship-game

victory over Los Alamitos. Plock connects on 6 of 7 three-pointers, four

in the second half, to go with four steals, four rebounds and four

assists. Estancia’s Chris Candlish and Corona del Mar’s Brian Coleman

make the all-tournament team.

Costa Mesa’s Robert Grayeli is named the CIF Southern Section Division

II Co-Player of the Year (along with Marina’s Stever O’Rourke). Mustangs

Sean Hylton and Elijah McDanniel also make the first team. Ryan Dandy and

James Comfort are second-team picks, while Roger Kirnos and goalie Justin

Taylor are third-team choices. Estancia’s Chad Bollenbach is a first-team

pick, while fellow Eagles’ senior Eric Wayman is a second-team selection.

Newport Harbor’s Chris Richardson is on the first team, while seniors

Mike Peetz and Chris Seib make the second team and senior goalie Graham

Harvey the third team. CdM’s Jeff Marchiorlatti is a first-team pick and

Alex Batley is a third-team honoree.

The Newport Harbor girls basketball team, overcame an 18-7 deficit to

win, 58-45, over Esperanza in the quarterfinals of the South Coast

Tournament. The Sailors outscore the Aztecs, 19-5, in the second quarter

as Andree Verhulst scores 16 points and has five steals. Harbor sails

into the tournament final with a 50-45 overtime victory as Desiree Talley

hits a three-pointer with 29 seconds left in the extra period.

The OCC women’s basketball team dominates in a 104-46 victory over

Cerritos as six Pirates score in double figures. Dianne Pulido, a Newport

Harbor product, scores a team-high 22 points, but everyone gets into the

act. Jamie Shine has 21 points, Tina Afan and Kathleen Kelly each score

17. Treanna Mather has 15 and Monica Geraci adds 10.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

In the semifinals of the Daily Pilot Tip-off Classic, the Newport

Harbor High boys basketball team wins with Justin McIntee’s 23 points and

12 rebounds in a 72-59 victory over San Dieguito. But, the Sailors go on

to lose in the final, 75-59, to Irvine.

The Estancia boys basketball team takes off for a 29-4 halftime lead

against Corona del Mar and wins, 60-45, in the semifinals of the Laguna

Beach Invitational. Estancia has three players score in double figures.

Sun Ly finishes with 25 points, Mike Haas has 15 and Paul McDaniels has

13. The Eagles go on to win the Laguna Beach tournament with a 69-68

verdict against Lynwood. Ly, the tournament’s MVP, scores 23 points. The

Eagles lead, 69-66, with 1:04 left as Haas runs out the clock with fancy

dribbling.Earlier, the CdM boys basketball team pushes past Laguna Beach,

62-54, to set up that semifinal matchup with Estancia in the Laguna Beach

Invitational. Jon Upham leads CdM with 30 points. Estancia defeats San

Clemente, 58-45, as Paul McDaniels scores 10 points, while Mike Haas has

18 and Matt Fuerbringer finishes with 15.

Costa Mesa’s Corey Delahunt is named CIF Southern Section Division 2-A

Co-Player of the Year in boys water polo. Delahunt scores 161 goals

during the season, which also includes his second straight Pacific Coast

League MVP award.

Teammate Julian Popov is also on the first team and Russ Glitone earns

second-team honors. Newport Harbor’s Richard Ruffini and CdM’s Ryan Weir

are first-team All-CIF Division 4-A.

The Sea Kings also place Brent O’Brien and Ted Simpkins on the second

team and goalie Rob Pike on the third team. The Sailors Rob Worthing is a

third-team honoree.
