AYSO Region 57: Wedge capture division title

NEWPORT BEACH - With wins on Saturday and Sunday, the Wedge

captured the AYSO Region 57 Division 4 championship, despite a last-place

finish during the regular season.

After taking the cellar, the Wedge ripped off five straight victories

and advanced to the finals, where they defeated the Silver Baboons, 2-0,

on Sunday.

Christian Morabito and Kevin Kottke each scored, while R.J. Baldoni,

Alex Ray, Jeff Livingston, Joshua Kim and Alireza Nazemi anchored the

Wedge’s defense.

Contributing to the Wedge’s offense was the strong play of Julian

Morsico, Andy Bender, Scott Feeley, Michael McHugh, Ricky Lobel and

Christopher Horton.

In Saturday’s semifinals, the Wedge defeated the first-place Blue

Devils, 1-0, on a goal by Marsico.

In girls under 12 action:

Sea Queens take league title: The Sea Queens won, 1-0, in both the semifinals on Saturday against the Kreemers and on Sunday against the

Team Kaos.

In the semifinals, Katherine Ossipoff’s goal in the third period

between three defenders broke the scoreless tie and advanced the Sea

Queens into Sunday’s finals.

Against Team Kaos, Ossipoff, off a pass from Stephanie Restaino, again

scored the game’s lone goal for the Sea Queens.

Team Kaos mounted several threats, but Sea Queens’ goalkeeper Paige

O’Brien made several key saves to ensure the win.

The Sea Queens, led by strong play from Lacey Schmidt, Kelly Meyer,

Hannah Rollins, Caitlan Dick, Hannah Soloh, Sarah Sullivan, Caitlin

Macatee, Natalie Shah, Sarah Wesley and Katie Cunningham, will advance to

the Area Q playoffs as the Newport Beach league champions.

The Strikers won the English Division championship with eight

consecutive wins, but placed second overall with a loss against the

Italian Division Slammers.

The Strikers were led in scoring by Kate Baldoni and Megan Gaal, while

Chloe Kowalski and goalkeeper Salima Allen (four saves per game) anchored

the defense.

In boys Division 4 action:

Red Fireballs 3, Metro Stars 0 - The Red Fireballs win the league

championship game with a 3-0 win over the Metro Stars.

Nick Pelligrini scored two goals, while Camden Nicholson scored a

single goal for the Fireballs.

Goalies Tenison Mitchell and Jake Pelligrini helped preserve the

shutout with stellar saves, while the offensive pressure was forced by

Karan Sahni, Lane Wilhelm, Jack Murphy and Koomi Chehabi.

In boys Division 7 action:

The Blue Angels, in their matchup with the Geckos, were led by strong

play from Reed Tucker, Nick McGuinness, Erik Ctvrtlick, Blake Grable,

Troy Reese and Davis Case. The Geckos were led on offense by goals from

Dylan Gronendyke.

In boys Division 6 action:

For the Green Lightnine Bolts, in their game with the Blue Blazers,

Mason Case and Bruce Bearer each scored first-half goals, while Colt

Nelson, Matthew Funsten, Garret Godfrey, Bryce Ashton, Trevor Friedman

and Brennan Anderson contributed with intense efforts.

For the Red Bombers’s game with the Golden Bombers, Sammy Witte scored

two goals, while Blake Thomsen, Miles Solomon, Ford Hanour and Sandon

Griffin each added single tallies.

The Bomber’s defense was led by Jesse Marans, Jonathan Teller and

David Fenner.

For the Green Devil Rays, in their contest against the Sharks, Kent

Smith scored four goals on assists from Kevin Maguire, Pete Rigas and

Tanner Grandstaff. Eric Zamucen, Connor Canale, Billy MacDonald and

Brandon Zelner also scored goals for the Green Devil Rays.

In the Green Bombers’ contest with the Phantoms, Hunter Meece scored

two goals, while Tanner Trauthen and Cole Chatham each scored single

goals.

The goals were assisted by strong offensive play from Pete Markel and

Sam Cubeiro, while Dan Steele, Alex Carlis, Cameron Orr and Matt Berry

played well on the defensive end.

In a battle of the “Blues,” the Blue Blizzard played well against the

Blue Dominators. Scoring for the Blizzard was Clark Cashion and Nicholas

Manning, while Ryan Grable, Zack Morabito, Zach Greensite, Eric Hallett,

Jeffrey Dyess, Brandon McHugh and Everett Scholey sparked the defense.

For the Fireballs, in their matchup against the Full Monty, strong

play was turned in by John Swigert, Matthew Burt, Gianni Multari, Jack

Gorab, Nick Molinaro, Anthony Deboub, Matt Larson, Logan Burkhead and

Kevin Kitzens.
