Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

The Estancia High girls basketball team wins its own tournament with a

53-39 victory over Corona del Mar. Assistant coach Paul Kirby sits in for

head coach Russ Davis, who is nursing a bad back. The Eagles’ Jessica

Waltz is crowned Most Valuable Player. Estancia’s Amy Deming and Jennifer

McCartin also make the all-tournament team along with CdM’s Lindsay

Warmington and Jennifer Gardner. In tournament pool play, the Eagles slam

Saddleback, 66-18, as Estancia players with nicknames come to play.

Viviana “Vivi” Rodriguez leads the way for the Eagles with 16 points,

four rebounds and two steals. Katie “Slammer” Stapleton pumps in 15

points and 10 rebounds. And Jessica “Freddy” Waltz finishes with 14

points, seven steals, two assists, two blocks and five rebounds. The

Eagles move on to beat Aliso Niguel, 59-22, as Waltz leads with 22

points.

CdM reaches the Estancia Tournament final with a key 61-45 win over El Toro. The Sea Kings’ Doris Hawley scores 12 points and grabs 18 rebounds.

Jennifer Gardner scores 18 and has 15 rebounds. Lindsay Warmington scores

17 and Kristen Kopp has 11.

The Newport Harbor girls basketball team captures the South Coast

Tournament championship with a come-from-behind 49-40 victory over host

University. Andree Verhulst scores a game-high 15 points and grabs seven

rebounds. Harbor center M.E. Clayton finishes with 13 points and seven

rebounds as the Tars overcome a 40-30 deficit with 6:38 remaining.

Estancia’s 6-foot-6 center Chris Candlish scores 25 points to lead the

Eagles boys basketball team to a 65-40 win over Huntington Beach. Point

guard Dane Plock scores seven points to go with seven assists. Sam Nelson

finishes with 17 points.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

Corona del Mar High’s Lara Carlsen and Tracy Schriber are named CIF

Southern Section Division 5-A Co-Players of the Year, after leading a

talent-laden CdM squad to the CIF 5-A crown, as well as the CIF State

Division I championship.

Newport Harbor’s Huy Nguyen scores a season-high 25 points to lead the

Sailors to a 64-63 boys basketball victory over Villa Park. Justin

McIntee scores 17 points and grabs 11 rebounds.

The Estancia girls soccer team scores a 2-0 victory over Huntington

Beach. Any Watson scores the goals. With less than one minute remaining

in the first half, Watson gets the Eagles on the board. She finishes the

job with less than five minutes remaining in the game as she heads in

Andrea Odicino’s corner kick.

The Estancia boys basketball team suffers a 52-51 loss to Huntington

Beach in the championship game of the La Quinta Classic. Huntington Beach

hits the winning shot with one second remaining as the Eagles are dealt

their first loss of the season. Son Ly scores 17 points and Matt

Fuerbringer has 12.

The Eagles reach the championship game with an 83-39 victory over

Troy, in which every Estancia starter foul out. Tim Pieper, Tim Leonard,

Jeff Hokanson, Dave DeCarlo and Matt Hanley come off the bench and answer

the call.

The day after the upset loss to Huntington Beach, the Eagles take out

their frustrations on host Mission Viejo with a 66-45 nonleague victory.

Mike Haas scores 17 points and Fuerbringer finishes with a game-high 22.
