SHORELINE, Wash. - It’s a different basketball game in the Pacific

Northwest, but for the Newport Harbor High boys basketball team, the

adjustment has come in stride.

Five players scored in double figures to lead the Sailors over

Seattle’s Arlington High, 62-57, in the semifinals of the Shorewood

Holiday Shootout on Friday.

“I really liked the balanced scoring tonight,” Newport Coach Larry

Hirst said. “We’re going to be our most successful if we get

contributions from more than just a couple of people.

Junior Greg Perrine led the Sailors (11-3) with 15 points, junior Erik

Peterson and seniors Aaron Yarnal and Tony Melum each chipped in with 12

and senior Steve Young came through with 11.

“Not having a shot clock up here has really been good to us,” Hirst

said. “Everything is so structured and very deliberate. It’s helped us

run our offense better and forces us to play longer defense.”

With the win over Arlington (8-2), Newport will face British

Columbia’s Pennington High today at 2 p.m. in the championship game.
