Donations still sought for ‘Save a Seat’ campaign

The Edison High “Save a Seat” campaign wants to raise $30,000 to

replace dilapidated wooden benches with new aluminum ones in the school’s

stadium. The wood benches are rotting away and are uncomfortable to sit

on. Donations of any amount are accepted.

So far, $6,000 has been donated, and school officials hope to gather

the funds and install new benches in time for graduation June 15.

Edison golf team plans fund-raising tourney

The Edison High School golf team is organizing a tournament for 11

a.m. Jan. 29 at Sea Cliff Country Club to raise money for the Boys &

Girls Club of Huntington Beach, the school golf team, the Huntington

Beach High School Golf Club and the Edison High School surf team.

The event will include a putting and long-drive competition, closest

to pin hole, hole in one (wins a car), silent auction and much more.

The entry fee is $125, which includes lunch.

Efforts by Blackline Environment, which is constructing the display

booths, and sponsors Broken Horn, Hurley, Quiksilver, Joyride Snowboards,

Gordon and Biersch Brewery and Pyramid Brewery have made the event

possible.

Boeing gives grant to educational foundation

The Huntington Beach Educational Foundation received a $15,000 grant

from Boeing to support technology purchases and teacher grants in the

Huntington Beach City School District’s 10 schools. Perry Cain, manager

of Government & Community Relations, presented the check to foundation

President Suzanne Beukema and district Supt. Duane Dishno at the

foundation’s recent Touchdown for Technology fund-raiser.

PTA contest winners on display at library

The Huntington Union Council Parent-Teacher Assn. announced that all

winners of the National PTA’s Reflections contests will be on display on

the windows of the Children’s Library at the Huntington Beach Center

Library on Talbert Avenue. The displays from the Visual Arts and

Photography categories will be presented through Saturday. Local

professionals and artisans will judge the entries at the library.

Student artworks were based on the theme “It would be really strange

if -- . First-place winners of the contest will compete in all of Orange

County. The winners from the Fourth District will compete in the state

competition and then the national contest.

Coastline joins forces with Navy for classes

Coastline Community College has signed a new partnership agreement

with the U.S. Navy designed to expand and improve voluntary education

opportunities for sailors serving their country.

Recognized for its pioneering distance learning programs, Coastline

has already been providing education opportunities for thousand of

sailors every year. In a recent ceremony at the Navy submarine base in

Groton, Conn., 50 sailors received associate’s degrees from Coastline,

many of whom were flown in from naval commands in distant locations.

Many courses will be accessed by sailors online via the Internet as

well as compact disc, video and print-based distance learning materials

that are independent of time or place constraints.

Donations sought for Coastline scholarships

Coastline Community College is seeking donations for scholarships for

students, such as immigrants facing language and financial handicaps and

single parents. A review of the preliminary list of scholarships

available at Coastline for next year confirms the college’s special

commitment and broad spectrum.

There is no limit to donations and those who donate $100 or more may

choose a title for their scholarship to honor a specific criteria for the

award. Donors also will be invited to a Scholarship Reception Awards

Program in May, where they can meet the recipients and present their

award.

Edison’s Pageantry Corps perform Gershwin

The Edison High School Pageantry Corps performed a Gershwin Theme Show

that featured a marching maneuver of the “diamond of death” and a

trombone solo of “Summertime” by Crystal Booher. The show also included

students Chuck Foote, Lindsay Johnson, Ryan Merril, Tracy Porter, Mike

Short and David Talbutt playing “I’ve Got Rhythm.”

Other members of the band included lieutenants Josiah Dahlin, Tim Hsu,

Ashley McPeck, Chris Nixson; Percussion captain Matt Hayes; Dance/Drill

captain Lauren DesJardins and Tall Flags captain Tiffany Hammontree. The

music was arranged by band alumni Justin Freer and is directed by James

Keys and assisted by Joseph Miller.
