Alex Huff came up big down the stretch and Chrissy Van Doornum

nearly came up with a course record at the recent Ocean View School

District 6th Grade Cross Country Championships held at the 1 1/2 mile

lake course at Huntington Central Park.

Huff, a student at Spring View Middle School, used a tremendous kick

to overtake Jesus Zuniga of Mesa View at the finish. Huff won the boys’

event with a time of 8:57, while Zuniga was second at 9:03.

Rounding out the boys’ top five were Bryce Overend of Marine View

(9:06) in third place, Matt Marion of Vista View (9:14) in fourth and

Albert Breitweiser of Marine View (9:16) in fifth.

Marine View placed seven runners among the top 13 spots.

In the girls’ run, Van Doornum of Marine View ran a blazing 9:00 and

barely missed the course record of 8:59, set in 1995 by Marine View’s

Kacy Dapp.

Vista View’s Natalie Rojas finished second (9:27), Mesa View’s Kristin

Thuve was third (9:45), Marine View’s Courtney Maywhort was fourth

(9:53), and Vista View’s Donna Hernandez was fifth (9:54).
