Less than a gallon of paint poured into a storm drain at Irvine Avenue

and 23rd Street in Newport Beach on Thursday afternoon, causing more

commotion in the cleanup effort than damage from the spill.

Newport Beach police and fire units responded to the spill after a car

ran over a partially full gallon container of water-based, latex paint at

about 4:20 p.m., police said.

The paint spilled into a storm drain, but did not reach Upper Newport

Bay. The nature preserve was not endangered, said Newport Beach Police

Sgt. Steve Schulmen.

The Newport Beach Fire Department and the state Department of Fish and

Game will oversee the cleanup, authorities said.
