Girls soccer: Mesa opens strong in Katella Tournament
ANAHEIM - The Costa Mesa High girls soccer team won two games
Saturday to open the Katella Tournament.
In the opener, the Mustangs defeated Brea-Olinda, 2-1. Sharon Day and
Katie Roche each scored goals for the Mustangs, while goalie Chelsea
Soria had 13 saves, including several in the final three minutes of the
game.
The Wildcats entered the game ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section
Division III, while Mesa is ranked No. 9 in Division IV.
In the second game, the Mustangs blanked St. Margaret’s, 4-0, behind
goals from Day, her 15th of the season, Lisa Dunn, Natalie Masciale and
Emily Abbott. Soria posted three saves against the Tartans, ranked No. 5
in Division V.
The Mustangs will resume Pacific Coast League action on Tuesday when
they host Northwood at 3:15 p.m. Mesa will return to the Katella
Tournament on Saturday at 9 a.m. and play Sunny Hills, ranked No. 9 in
Division II.
Sailors lose in TofC semifinals
Newport Harbor High’s girls water polo team, ranked No. 3 in Orange
County, lost to No. 2 Capistrano Valley, 2-1, in the semifinals Saturday
of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions at UC Santa Barbara.
Newport Harbor (13-4) lost to host Santa Barbara, 6-3, for third
place. Harbor goalie Heather Deyden recorded 16 saves, including two
against a six-on-five for the Dons.
Foothill, the county’s top-ranked team, defeated Capo Valley in the
tournament final, 6-3.
Carsten Ball of Corona del Mar captured the first designated tennis
tournament of the USTA season by defeating Bijan Maoellomi of San Diego,
7-6, 6-4, in the boys 14s championship match Sunday in the San Diego
Junior Open at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Magic to speak at UC Irvine
Former NBA star and living legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson is expected
to speak at UC Irvine’s Bren Events Center Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
The engagement, called “An Evening with Magic Johnson,” features the
man who led the Lakers to five NBA titles, played in 11 all-star games and led the original Dream Team that won a gold medal at the 1992
Olympics in Barcelona.
General admission is $12, $10 for UCI faculty/staff, UCI Alumni
Association members or non-UCI students. UCI students can enter for $5.
