Men’s basketball: Early drought does in Lions

COSTA MESA - The Vanguard University men’s basketball team fell

into a 27-point hole in the first half and despite a strong second-half

surge, lost to visiting Westmont, 78-70, in Golden State Athletic

Conference action Tuesday night.

The Warriors (10-5, 3-3 in conference) shot a sizzling 60% from the

field (21 of 35) in the first half, while Vanguard (4-13, 0-7) shot only

33% (9 of 27).

The Lions managed to outscore the Warriors by 19 in the second half,

but it wasn’t enough.

Kemmy Burgess led Vanguard with 23 points, while Dennis Keane chipped

in 18 and Brandon Cablay added 12.

Mitch Pierce led Westmont with 17, while Corey Blick added 14.

The Lions will continue GSAC play at Biola University Saturday night

at 7:30.
