Barons get defensive in 43-27 triumph

Combining their best defensive showing of the season with a strong

all-around performance by Kevin Deherrera, the Barons defeated the Lakers

on Sunday, 43-27, in a Fountain Valley National Junior Basketball boys’

Division II contest played at Fountain Valley High School.

Deherrera posted 16 points and collected eight rebounds, his

performance punctuated by an eight-assist effort.

Ketan Chopra also hit double figures with 11 points.

The Barons’ defense was led by Tyler Freleaux, who collected 12

rebounds; Brandon Kurz, who finished with 10 caroms; and Jordan Potter,

who added nine rebounds.

Fountain Valley 33, Barons 20

Stuart Schultz’s best performance of the season for the Barons, which

included nine points scored along with four steals and a pair of assists,

was overshadowed by turnovers and poor shot selections by the Barons.

76ers 49, Knicks 29

The Knicks played their best ball of the season in the opening half of

Sunday’s game against the 76ers but were outscored by 15 points in the final half of play.

Tyler Petry topped the Knicks with 13 points, four steals and four

rebounds; Chase Barnes added six points and blocked two shots; Buster

Gallegos had four points, three assists and three steals; and Matt James

had six assists, five rebounds, five steals and scored a basket.

DIVISION III

Bombers 53, Li’l Barons 31

The Li’l Barons, despite playing with just six players, stayed with

the divison-leading Bombers for a half before being outmanned in the

second half.

SEVENTH-GRADE ALL-NET DIVISION

Fountain Valley No. 1 58, Villa Park 46

Fountain Valley’s No. 1 seventh-grade All-Net team posted its first

victory of the season Sunday at Villa Park High School behind a 22-point,

eight-rebound game by Samer Haddad.

Nathan Morris added 10 points, four rebounds and five assists; Mike

Doran had 10 points and four rebounds; and Brandon Duquette pulled down

eight rebounds and scored seven points as Fountain Valley improved to

1-5.

Diamond Bar 58, Fountain Valley No. 1 54

In the first of two games on Sunday, Haddad again led Fountain Valley,

this time with 25 points and nine rebounds. Mike Doran led the team in

rebounds with 10 (and also scored eight points), Nathan Morris scored

nine points and had five assists and four rebounds, and Brandon Duquette

scored eight points and had six rebounds.

Four of Fountain Valley’s five Blue Division losses have been decided

in the game’s final three minutes.
