A mix of well-known names and newcomers mark the list of 24 residents
who have applied for the Costa Mesa parks and planning commissions.
The council voted in December to end all commission terms in February,
cutting some terms short by two years.
The council is scheduled in February to select 10 new commissioners --
five to each commission -- from among the applicants.
Chris Sarris, Jonathan Zich, David Stiller, Margaret Johnston and Mark
Harris have submitted applications -- due Monday -- for reappointment to
the parks commission.
Richard Mehren, whose term was scheduled to end in March, has decided
not to reapply.
Four planning commissioners -- Tom Sutro, Katie Wilson, Walt Davenport
and Katrina Foley -- also have applied for reappointment. Commissioner
Chris Fewel resigned in December.
Dan Worthington, who ran for City Council last year, has applied for a
Parks Commission position, as has Robert Love, a member of the Citizens’
Budget Advisory Committee.
Bruce Garlich, a Wimbledon Village Housing Assn. board member, has
applied for both commissions. Costa Mesa residents Steven Shapiro, Kim
Pederson and Kelly Feldman, who protested a year ago against the
potential sale of Balearic Park, also have applied for spots on the Parks
Commission.
Michael Levi Schrock, co-chairman of a 1999 fund-raiser for building
and renovating homeless shelters, has applied for a Planning Commission
position.
Thomas Steinfeld, the architecture and drafting professor at Orange
Coast College, and Mike Whitehead, who hosted the “Boathouse” TV show and
runs the Isla Mujeres tour ship in Newport Beach, have applied for
Planning Commission positions.
Campbell Davidson, a member of the West Side Improvement Assn.; John
Rule, a member of the Newport Schools Foundation; and William Perkins,
who ran for a City Council position in November, also have applied for
Planning Commission seats.
Another Planning Commission applicant is Donn Hall, a member of the
Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce and a former mayor of Costa Mesa.
