LAGUNA BEACH - The Estancia High boys soccer team prompted

comparisons to last year’s CIF Southern Section Division IV championship

team from Coach Steve Crenshaw Monday, with a 5-2 Pacific Coast League

win at Laguna Beach.

“We looked like the Aguilas of old,” Crenshaw said. “We were awesome.

If we play like this, we can beat anybody.”

Crenshaw said the team’s goal, entering the game made up from a

previous rainout, was to pepper the Artists’ goalkeeper with shots.

Mission accomplished, as senior midfielder Juan Zarate paced the

winners with two goals, one in each half. Abdul Kayium, Javier Millan and

Osbaldo Nieves also scored for the Eagles, who improved to 6-3-3, 3-2-0

in league.

Goalie Adam Kapko made three saves for the winners, for whom Crenshaw

also praised the play of senior midfielder Armando Ortiz.

“Armando had one assist and he continues to be the best player on the

field for us every game,” Crenshaw said.

The victory kicked off a big week for the Eagles, who host Laguna

Wednesday, CdM Friday, visit Costa Mesa in another makeup game Saturday,

then finish up with league games Feb. 5 and Feb. 7.

Sailors blanked, 3-0

NEWPORT BEACH - The Irvine High boys soccer team picked up where it

left off against Newport Harbor Monday, earning a 3-0 Sea View League

victory at the Sailors’ field.

Irvine rallied in the closing minutes to claim a 2-2 tie in the first

league meeting between the two and the Vaqueros were too much for the

Tars from the outset.

Irvine (3-6-3, 1-0-3) led, 2-0, at halftime.

Newport (3-5-4, 1-2-1) received 10 saves from senior goalie Duke

Burchell.
