The Marine Corps Toys For Tots effort received more than 10 boxes of

toys from teachers in the Huntington Beach City, Ocean View and the

Huntington Beach Union High school districts. Students at Mesa View

Middle School got involved in the Peer Assistance League, as well as

eighth-grade wood shop students at Vista View Middle School. Under the

guidance of teacher Kem Muilenburg, the students built 36 wood airplanes,

many of which were hand-painted before delivery.

Ocean View High awarded grant for summer program

Ocean View High School received $35,200 from the California Department

of Education to begin an intensive English language literacy program.

The new program will allow 88 students from the high school to attend

a six-week summer program that will focus on reading, writing, speaking

and grammar. Students will be selected from the English Language

Development Department and will earn elective credits. The goal of the

program will be the redesignation for students from limited English to

fluent English proficiency.

High school staff places first in yearbook competition

The Huntington Beach High School yearbook staff won first place in the

American Scholastic Press Assn.’s annual yearbook competition.

The 1999-00 Oilers’ yearbook staff, under the direction of advisor

Mark Kamei, received notice last month that “Cauldron” shows excellence

in writing, photography and page design.

Tarwater receives outstanding education award

Ocean View School District Supt. Jim Tarwater received the Outstanding

Contributions to Education Award sponsored by the Orange County

Department of Education. The award recognizes the contributions of

individuals whose unique efforts have influenced the education of Orange

County students.

Tarwater came to the district in 1992. During his tenure as

superintendent, 10 of 15 schools have achieved California Distinguished

Schools recognition. Tarwater also made Ocean View the first district in

Orange County to implement class-size reduction in kindergarten through

third grades.

Golden West’s gallery to hold opening reception

An opening reception for “Selections from Permanent Collections,” the

first art show this year at the Fine Arts Gallery, is scheduled for 7 to

9 p.m. Feb. 12.

Refreshments will be served, and curator Donna Sandrock will present a

background discussion about the show. The show will run from Feb. 13

throughMarch 9.

The Fine Arts Gallery is at Golden West College, 15744 Goldenwest St.,

Huntington Beach.
