The following students were winners in the Huntington Beach City

School District Spelling Bee held Jan. 18: Jade Quail, fourth grade, and

Jacob Jaffe, fifth grade, Peterson Elementary School; Michael Thompson,

sixth grade, and Cassie Wallace, eighth grade, Dwyer Middle School; and

Nancy Woo, seventh grade, Sowers Middle School . . . Jeremy Vidales of

Huntington Beach earned a 3.5 grade-point average for the fall semester

at the University of Oklahoma . . . Army Reserve Pvt. Rollie G. Bennett

of Huntington Beach graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson

in Columbia, S.C. During the training, he received instruction and

practice in drill and ceremony, marching, physical fitness, first aid and

Army history and traditions . . . The Orange County Chapter of the

Muscular Dystrophy Assn. named David Grosse of Huntington Beach as head

of its Executive Committee for the 2001-03 term . . . Huntington Beach

resident Sierra Mowll received an honorable mention in the 2001 Music

Center Spotlight Awards for photography competition . . . Marine Corps

Reserve Pfc. Ian J. Moloney completed basic training at Marine Corps

Recruit Depot in San Diego. Moloney completed 12 weeks of training

designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.

He is the son of Gayle L. Moloney of Huntington Beach . . . Army Reserve

Pvt. Amanda B. Garcia of Huntington Beach graduated from basic military

training at Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville, Mo. During the training,

she received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, tactics,

physical fitness and first aid. She is the daughter of Patricia M. Garcia

. . . Talbert Middle School recognized sixth-graders Michelle King and

Beau Nicolette, seventh-graders Heather Hanson and Cody Steiner, and

eighth-graders Monika Tayag, Ryan Brenes and Kyle Teter at a student

recognition program . . . Jana Stone of Huntington Beach received a

bachelor’s degree from Illinois Central College.
