Boys soccer: Mesa falls to University

COSTA MESA - It was a game of wide-open nets and missed

opportunities for the Costa Mesa High boys soccer team.

The Mustangs had numerous chances to score, but could not find the

back of the net during Wednesday’s 1-0 Pacific Coast League loss to

visiting University.

“It was a great game,” Mesa Coach Eugene Day said. “We must of had 12

great chances to score, but we just couldn’t do it. Oh well, that’s

soccer for you.”

Goalie Bryce Sheridan had six saves for the Mustangs (10-5-1, 4-2 in

league), but it went for naught as University’s Chris Baez scored the

game’s lone goal in the 10th minute.

Day was pleased with the play of junior stopper Steven Thomas. “He was

solid for us, covering the entire defending area,” Day said.

The Mustangs will play at first-place Northwood Friday at 5 p.m.
