Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

The Costa Mesa High girls basketball team outscores host Aliso Niguel,

35-10, in the second half en route to a 62-32 victory. Mustangs Chanel

Anderson and Koo Kim score 17 points each and Katie Grogan finishes with

12. Anderson and Grogan also grab 10 rebounds each. The victory sets up

the Mustangs to earn a 40-39 win over crosstown rival Estancia. The lead

changes seven times in the fourth quarter as Anderson scores an

awkward-looking left-handed hook shot for the gamewinner with 29 seconds

remaining. Anderson finishes with nine points, while Grogan scores 11.

Estancia’s Jessica Waltz endures foul trouble to lead the Eagles with 11

points.

Newport Harbor’s wrestlers edge past Back Bay rival Corona del Mar,

40-35. The Tars have a slim lead, 36-35, before Harbor heavyweight Jason

Deere wins by decision over CdM’s Jason Jones, 11-2, for the win. The

Sailors’ Brad Lim pins Sea King Ross Savage, 35 seconds into the match.

CdM’s Brad Guzman, however, records the fastest pin of the night when he

covers his opponent just 14 seconds into the match. Sea Kings Brian

Kramer, Tyler Moleway and Charles Gellman each pin their rivals.

Newport Harbor has the bragging rights after a 69-40 girls basketball

triumph over Back Bay rival Corona del Mar. The host Sailors break away

from an 18-18 tie and reel off an 18-2 run. Harbor’s M.E. Clayton scores

a game-high 15 points. Sailors Colleen Eadie (14 points) and Breanna

Badorek (11) also score in double figures. Lindsay Warmington leads the

Sea Kings with 14 points and Jennifer Gardner scores nine.

The Newport Harbor girls soccer team defeats Back Bay rival Corona del

Mar 2-1. The Sea Kings dominate the first 17 minutes as Julie Garrison

gives CdM a 1-0 lead. But, the visiting Tars fire back seven minutes

later when Harbor senior Ashley Lewis cashes in a goal. Sailors senior

Jill Nelsen scores the eventual gamewinner, 10 minutes later.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

The Estancia High boys basketball team dominates in a 66-33 victory

over Century. Coach Tim O’Brien’s Eagles outscore the Centurions, 19-8,

in the second quarter as Estancia hits 14 of 29 in the first half. Eagles

guard Mike Haas led all scorers with 20 points and center Matt

Fuerbringer finishes with 13 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots.

Son Ly adds eight points, all in the first half, and Paul McDaniels has

seven.

Corona del Mar’s boys basketball team nearly wins, but falls in a

69-67 overtime loss to host Woodbridge. The Sea Kings lead, 58-50 with 56

seconds left in regulation, but two Warriors’ three-pointers, the second

with three seconds left, helped Woodbridge knot the game at 60 at the end

of regulation. CdM’s Doug Hesse scores a game-high 24 points. His

teammate, Jon Upham, finishes with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

It takes two overtimes, but the Newport Harbor boys basketball team

pulls out a 60-56 win at Saddleback. Steve Walker saves the Tars in

regulation and Michael Stipe’s three-pointer ignites a Newport run in the

second overtime to lead to victory. Huy Nguyen scores a game-high 21

points and Justin McIntee chips in with 13. Stipe finishes with 10

points.

The Southern California College (now Vanguard University) men’s

basketball team rolls to a 100-86 victory over host Azusa Pacific. The

Vanguards shoot 56% from the field and hit 8 of 13 three-pointers. Jeff

Bickmore scores a game-high 25 points and Jason Quinn has 16 points and

seven assists. Mike West scores 12 points and grabs 12 rebounds. Mike

Hanjum finishes with 14 points and Elbert Davis scores 13.

The Corona del Mar girls soccer team remains unbeaten in league with a

1-1 tie to Woodbridge. The visiting Sea Kings are 6-0-1 in the Sea View

League after Stefanie Hughes scores a goal. CdM junior Lisa Boatman, the

team’s leading scorer with 18 goals, nearly scores. Hughes is second on

the team in goals with 14.
