CORONA DEL MAR - With only 50 seconds remaining, and his team

trailing 3-2, Corona del Mar’s Patrick Suozzi, a boys under-12 soccer

player, created a new nickname for himself.

You can now call, Patrick, “Hat Trick.”

Suozzi scored his third goal of the day on a breakaway to lead his

Mavericks to a 3-3 tie with mini-Back Bay rival the Newport Beach

Juventas Saturday at Anderson field.

“I thought we were going to lose,” Suozzi said. “But, when the ball

ricocheted off Mitchell (Williams) I knew I had the break. I blasted it.

And, it felt really good.”

Mitchell Williams assisted two of Suozzi’s goals and Alex Belove

helped on another score.

Suozzi’s first goal gave the Mavericks an early lead. But, Newport

Beach’s Will Reichenstein answered with a goal of his own.

Suozzi then scored to regain the lead.

The Juventas tied it up again, 2-2, after John Manchester’s throw-in

and Brian Siemonsma finished it for a goal. Garrett Heiser and Denny

Perdomo teamed to give Newport Beach its first lead. Heiser fed Perdomo

on a breakaway and Perdomo finished for the score.

Earlier in the day, the Juventas (2-0-1) defeated North Irvine, 3-1,

as Jake Kalwitz scored two goals and Adrian Buononce had the other.

The Mavericks (0-0-3) battled to a scoreless tie with South Irvine on

Saturday morning.
