The Estancia High boys soccer team clinches a Pacific Coast League

title after a 1-1 tie with Aliso Niguel on the Eagles’ field. With two

minutes remaining, Estancia’s Ramon Garcia scores on a penalty kick as a

Wolverines player is called for a hand violation. Aliso Coach Ken Ezratty

says the ball hit his player’s shoulder and also says the Eagles play

“dirty.”

Corona del Mar senior Brian Coleman knocks down an 18-foot jump shot

to beat the buzzer that lifts the Sea Kings’ boys basketball team to a

55-53 victory over Woodbridge. The upset win over the Sea View

League-leading Warriors comes thanks to Coleman who scores a game-high 24

points and dishes out nine assists. CdM’s Adam Klinke adds 19 points.

The Estancia boys basketball team clinches a PCL championship with a

57-42 victory over visiting Aliso Niguel. It is the first time in

Estancia’s history that the Eagles, coached by Tim Parsel, win back to

back league titles. Estancia senior Dane Plock scores a game-high 20

points, including five three-pointers and Chris Candlish finishes with 14

points. Eagle Nick Novak adds 11.

Newport Harbor’s girls basketball clinches a Sea View League title

after a 58-36 victory over host Santa Margarita. Sailors’ junior guard

Colleen Eadie scores a career-high 18 points, while 6-foot junior Breanna

Badorek finishes with 15. Harbor shares its league championship with

Irvine as the two split in league play.

The Newport Harbor boys soccer team earns a CIF Southern Section

playoff berth with a 1-1 tie against Santa Margarita. With 13 minutes

remaining, Harbor’s Ryan Hoover knots the score when he finishes a pass

from Brett Baker. Tars’ goalie Zach Wells turns back six critical saves.

CdM’s Josh Weinstein posts four assists that led to a 4-1 boys soccer

victory over visiting Irvine. Weinstein’s passes leads to two goals for

Derrick Newcomer, one for Chris Strong and Weinstein finds David Fruchbom

for the final score which ices the game. Sea Kings’ goalie Ken Brown

finishes with five saves.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team staggers Back Bay rival

Corona del Mar with a 65-62 overtime victory. The host Sailors surrender

a 55-51 edge with 40 seconds left in regulation, but come up big in the

extra period. Harbor’s Huy Nguyen leads with 27 points, adding six

assists and five rebounds. The Tars also receive contributions from

Justin McIntee (18 points and 10 rebounds) and Mike Stipe’s 10 points.

CdM’s also scores 27 points and Doug Hesse adds 10 points and nine

rebounds.

It’s a big week for the Tars as, earlier in the week, they upset

Tustin, ranked No. 3 in Orange County, 50-46. Harbor slows down the tempo

as Nguyen directs the offense and scores 22 points. McIntee finishes with

a double-double consisting of 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Mark

McAnlis has 12 points.

Also, earlier in the week, CdM’s Upham scores 31 points and grabs

seven rebounds to lead the Sea Kings to a 78-62 victory over visiting

University. Upham hits 11 of 17 shots from the field and eight of nine

from the free-throw line.

The Estancia boys basketball team completes a perfect season in the

Pacific Coast League with a 78-41 dismantling of crosstown rival Costa

Mesa. The host Eagles finish with a 21-4 overall record. Estancia’s Paul

McDaniels leads with 11 points as 12 other Eagles finish with points in

the scoring column.

The Estancia girls basketball team clinches a PCL title with a 56-46

victory over crosstown rival Costa Mesa in the Eagles gym before an

estimated 1,200 fans. Eagles’ Patrice Lumpkin and Melody Earle supply a

1-2 punch that scores 50 of Estancia’s 56 points. Lumpkin scores a

game-high 29 points and Earle finishes with 21. Mesa’s Olivia DiCamilli

scores 23.

Newport Harbor’s girls basketball edges past Back Bay rival CdM 57-56.

The Sailors erase a 45-42 third-quarter deficit and hold off the host Sea

Kings behind 16 points apiece from Michaela Ross and Maureen McLaren.
