Estancia High’s Dane Plock drills a three-pointer with 12 seconds

remaining that gives the Eagles’ boys basketball team a 77-76 overtime

victory over visiting South Hills in the first round of the CIF Southern

Section III-A playoffs. Fellow senior Chris Candlish fouls out with 48

seconds remaining in overtime. Both Candlish and Plock finish with a

career-high 28 points. Nick Novak scores nine points.

Corona del Mar’s boys basketball players act as road warriors as the

Sea Kings take down host La Canada, 72-54, their second CIF Division

III-A playoff victory of the week. Darren MacDonald scores a career-high

26 points. Brian Coleman (18 points) and Adam Klinke (13) also finish in

double figures. Earlier in the week, the Sea Kings defeat Chaminade,

52-46, as Coleman leads with 17 in the CIF wild-card game.

Newport Harbor’s Justin Kerr scores his 25th goal of the season, a

school record, to lead the Sailors’ boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory

over host Santiago in the first round of the CIF Division III playoffs.

Kerr scores on a penalty kick in the second overtime. He also finishes a

penalty kick in the first half for a 1-0 edge. Earlier in the week, Kerr

scores two goals, despite torn ligaments in his ankle, to key a 2-1

victory at Laguna Hills.

The Newport Harbor girls basketball team rolls to a 62-58 CIF Division

III-A wild-card-playoff victory over Newbury Park. Breanna Badorek scores

a game-high 22 points and M.E. Clayton has 17 points. Colleen Eadie

finishes with 10 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week ...

Newport Harbor High’s Michaela Ross scores a career-high 32 points as

the Sailors girls basketball team defeats Los Amigos, 69-43, in the

qualifying round of the CIF Southern Section Division III-A playoffs.

Ross also adds 10 rebounds and six steals. Maureen McLaren finishes with

15 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. The victory marks the

first time the Sailors make the CIF Playoffs.

The Corona del Mar boys soccer team slips past Elsinore, 1-0, in the

CIF Division I-A Playoffs. In the 19th minute, Bill Rimmer scores Sea

Kings’ lone goal. Rimmer takes a header from teammate Scott Owen and puts

a low bouncer into the right side of the net from 12 yards out.

The Newport Harbor boys team coasts to a 64-49 victory over Culver

City in the CIF Division III-A Playoffs. Justin McIntee scores 26 of his

game-high 34 points in the second half. Coach Bob Serven’s Sailors reel

off an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. The

Tars win despite a sprained ankle sustained by starting point guard Huy

Nguyen.

The Corona del Mar boys basketball team subdues Northwood in a 55-51

triumph in the CIF Division III-A playoffs. Jon Upham scores a game-high

26 points and grabs 10 rebounds. Doug Hesse finishes with 18 points and

nine rebounds.

The Estancia boys basketball team romps past Los Amigos, 62-34, in the

CIF Division III-AA playoffs. Coach Tim O’Brien’s Eagles build a 16-point

first-quarter lead as the Estancia crowd chants goodbye to the Lobos.

Matt Fuerbringer leads the Eagles with 19 points, while Paul McDaniels

(16) and Son Ly (13) also score in double figures.
