WHAT HAPPENED:

The Board of Trustees approved a state-funded summer school program at

Masuda Middle and Plavan and Tamura elementary schools to begin in June

and July. Also approved to begin in August was a Running Start Program

for kindergartners and first-graders at Cox, Oka and Tamura elementary

schools, and a pre-kindergarten Running Start Program at all elementary

schools in the city.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The summer school programs will offer remediation and enrichment

classes, as well as classes for special education and English language

learners.

The Running Start program is for students entering kindergarten in the

fall with birthday’s that fall between Sept. 1 and Dec. 2.

The remediation classes are restricted to the area the student failed

in, and applications will be available to parents during March

conferences.

Regular summer school is open on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Private school students living in the district boundaries are welcome.

Enrollment forms for regular summer school will be available at each

school office by April 9.

IN FAVOR

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board approved the acceptance of the Early Intervention for School

Success grant at Tamura Elementary School.

WHAT IT MEANS:

Over the next three years, Tamura will receive a total of $60,000,

which will be used to collect data to assess the performance of early

intervention classrooms versus non-early intervention classrooms.

The grant will cover all the costs of the longitudinal study.

NEXT MEETING

Fountain Valley School District will meet at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in the

board room at the district office, 17210 Oak St., Fountain Valley.
