Literacy Volunteers of America-Huntington Valley announces the

graduation of nine newly trained literacy tutors: Ria Cencak, Don

Danielson, Betty Lewis, Peg Richie, Mary Jo Settles, Paul Wittkamm,

Luanna Young and Pete Young of Huntington Beach, and Jeanne Hannahs of

Costa Mesa. Each trained tutor will help an adult to improve his or her

reading, writing or speaking skills through the Huntington Beach library

system. Nearly 400 volunteers and adult students now participate in the

Community Police Academy accepting applicants

The Fountain Valley Police Department is accepting applications for

the next Community Police Academy. This program provides Fountain Valley

residents and business personnel an opportunity to learn about the daily

operations of the Police Department. Classes will start in March and run

from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays for 12 weeks. Today is the deadline for

Ms. Senior California Pageant preliminary set

A preliminary Ms. Senior California Pageant will be held April 14 at

the Rodgers Seniors’ Center, sponsored by the Exchange Club of Huntington

Beach. Five finalists will compete for the title of Ms. Senior California

in August. To be eligible, contestants must be 60 or older.

Harman to offer unpaid internships

Two unpaid internship positions are available in the district office

of Assemblyman Tom Harman (R-Huntington Beach).

Duties include answering phones, filing and general office assistance,

as well as some community outreach. Both internships are voluntary and

have flexible hours. Applicants must complete a state volunteer

application.

Boeing’s grant to aid Coastline program

The Boeing Co. Charitable Foundation has announced a grant for $30,000

toward the establishment of a new program at Coastline Community College

known as New Students for the Information Technology Workforce.

The program will be designed to prepare educationally or economically

disadvantaged students for jobs in technology. Thomas J. Snyder,

director of planning and development for the college, said the program

will create a model Technical Assessment and Cognitive Learning Computer

Center, which will provide students with hands-on experience in a

specially designed computer lab.

The students will also meet with and be assisted by counselors and

staff from the college and personnel from various work force projects.

After they have mastered the preliminary classes, students will be able

to enter voluntary internship positions so they may demonstrate their

abilities and experience real-world applications of the abstract concepts

they are learning.

City Golf Tournament set for April

The city of Huntington Beach will host the 13th annual City Golf

Tournament at Meadowlark Golf Course on April 28. The tournament is open

to everyone. Awards will be given to the top 15 players for low gross and

the top 15 players for low net. In addition, awards for the longest drive

and closest to the pin also will be rewarded.

The fee for the tournament is $80, and registration is limited to 100

golfers. The registration deadline is April 15. Information: (714)

Harman appointed to seven Assembly committees

Assemblyman Tom Harman (R-Huntington Beach) has been appointed to

seven committees of the state Assembly. He will serve as the vice

chairman of the Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee. In addition, he

will also serve on the Agriculture, Governmental Organization, Insurance,

Judiciary, Local Government and Natural Resources committees.

Golf tournament to benefit music education

The Huntington Beach Philharmonic Committee will hold its annual golf

tournament starting at noon May 21 at SeaCliff Country Club, 6501 Palm

Ave., Huntington Beach. The event will include a putting contest,

barbecue lunch, 18 holes of golf, two charity auctions and an awards

dinner.

The cost for the event is $185 for an early registration discount

before May 1, and $195 for regular admission. All proceeds go for toward

music education programs for Orange County school students. Information:

Art Center to host exhibit

The Huntington Beach Art Center will present a solo exhibit of works

by Ronald Reiss. The exhibition will feature Reiss’ large-scale

sculpture, miniature tableaux and new paintings. They will be on display

from March 3 to April 14, and a reception will take place from 7 to 9

p.m. March 3.
