Fountain Valley resident Melissa Potter was named to the 2000-2001

first semester Honors List at Concordia University in Seward, Neb. She is

the daughter of Duane and Carol Potter of Fountain Valley . . . Air Force

Col. Mark D. Stephen of Fountain Valley arrived for duty at Kirtland Air

Force Base in Albuquerque, N.M. He is the director of the Air Force

Research Laboratory’s Directed Energy Laser Division. He is the son of

John and Julia Stephen . . . Army Reserve Pvt. Harvey H. Herela graduated

from the Petroleum Supply Specialist Advanced Individual Training Course

at Fort Lee in Petersburg, Va. He received instruction in receipt,

storage, issue, shipping and distribution of petroleum and oil. He is the

son of Carlos and Ana Maria of Huntington Beach . . . Marine Corps Pvt.

Gilbert S. Garcia completed basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit

Depot in San Diego. He completed 12 weeks of training designed to

challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. In addition

to physical conditioning, Garcia spent many hours performing classroom

and field assignments that included learning first aid, uniform

regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and

assorted weapons training. He is the son of Dianna F. Brooks of Norwalk

and Gilbert C. Garcia of Huntington Beach.
