WHAT HAPPENED:

Ron Shenkman, president of the Educational Enrichment Foundation,

presented the district’s principals with checks totaling $25,000.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The proceeds came from a grant from the Boeing Employee Fund and the

Gala Brunch held by the foundation at the Waterfront Hilton Beach Resort

in October.

Schools submitted requests for items such as media software, audio and

visual equipment and tools for applied arts classes. The funds will be

used by each school for equipment and programs directly benefiting the

students.

IN FAVOR

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board of trustees accepted $363,951 from the California Department

of Education under the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The grant funds will be used to supplement existing Adult Education

services and programs during this school year. No matching funds are

required.

IN FAVOR

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board of trustees accepted the Education Technology Grant Program

in the amount of $2.37 million from the state.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The grant will be used to purchase computers. to reduce the

student-to-multimedia computers ratio to 4.75 to 1. Remaining funds can

be used for computer related equipment and software, networking,

technical support or professional development and training. No matching

funds are required.

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board approved a $26,500 agreement with Ardeshir Bahar Architect

AIA for the design of a physical training building at Edison High School.

The building is to be paid for with funds donated to the Associated

Student Body.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The proposal includes the design plans for a 40 X 100 foot building

and the renovation of two restrooms to meet the Americans with

Disabilities Act.

IN FAVOR

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board adopted a resolution calling for a reduction in energy

usage.

WHAT IT MEANS:

Gov. Gray Davis has directed state and city agencies to reduce

electricity use in state facilities by 8%. The district has already

implemented energy efficient lighting and air conditioning systems.

NEXT MEETING

The Huntington Beach Union High School District will meet again at

7:30 p.m. Feb. 27 in the district board room, 10251 Yorktown Ave., Huntington Beach.
