Locals begin quest for CIF titles

Having survived the rigors of the regular season, several local high

school teams begin their respective journeys this week in CIF Southern

Section competition.

Twelve teams in three different sports (basketball, soccer, water

polo) earned postseason bids.

The Fountain Valley boys’ soccer team kicked things off Wednesday by

taking on Diamond Bar in a Division I wild-card match. Should the Barons

beat the host Brahmas, they’ll advance to face Saddleback in Saturday’s

first round.

Tonight in girls’ basketball, Huntington Beach, Edison and Ocean View

play first round games -- all on the road.

In Division I-A action, the Oilers go to Villa Park and the Chargers

travel to Santa Fe. The Seahawks will visit La Habra in a Division II-A

contest.

First round play in boys’ basketball begins for Ocean View, Fountain

Valley, and Marina on Friday. The Golden West League champion Seahawks

will host the winner of Wednesday’s wild-card game between Bonita and

Hesperia in Division II-A play. Fountain Valley, the No. 2 seed from the

Sunset League, hosts Lynwood in Division I-AAA action, while Marina

travels to face Crescenta Valley in a Division I-AA game.

Girls’ soccer opens for a pair of locals Friday when Sunset League

champion Edison entertains the winner of Wednesday’s wild-card meeting

between Arlington and Temescal Canyon in a Division II battle, while

Ocean View hosts a Division IV match with Bassett.

The boys’ soccer playoffs continue Saturday with first round play,

featuring a Division I showdown between host Huntington Beach and Mira

Costa.

Also Saturday, first round play in girls’ water polo begins with

Marina hosting a Division I match against Irvine. In girls’ Division I-AA

basketball, Marina travels to face Irvine.
