The Berlin Philharmonic, pianist Alfred Brendel and the Vienna

Philharmonic are among the artists scheduled to appear in Orange County

during 2001-02 courtesy of the Orange County Philharmonic Society’s

Masterworks Series.

The society’s 48th annual series will open with Mark Morris’

production of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s comic opera “Platee” on Sept. 28

and 29. The performance, which also will open the 2001 Eclectic Orange

Festival, will be followed on Oct. 15 and 16 by the Berlin Philharmonic’s

final U.S. performances with Claudio Abbado as music director.

The Vienna Philharmonic will present three days’ of shows at Sergstrom

Hall, beginning March 11, 2002. The shows will be lead by Bernard

Haitink, music director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

On April 7, 2002, pianist Alfred Brendel will give a one-night-only

performance, and the series will conclude with the return of music

director Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic on May 18,

2002.

As part of the Masterworks Series, subscribers will receive free

parking for all of the Masterworks shows at the Orange County Performing

Arts Center. Series subscriptions, available now, are $209 to $599.
