Irwin and Trevino commit

NEWPORT BEACH - The two winningest players in Senior PGA Tour

history are officially scheduled to appear at the 2001 toshiba Senior Classic.

Hale Irwin and Lee Trevino, who share the Senior Tour record for most

career titles, have joined the list of players formally committed to

Orange County’s exclusive Senior Tour event, which starts Feb. 26.

Irwin captured one of his 29 official Senior Tour career titles at the

1998 Toshiba Senior Classic, where he shot a Newport Beach Country Club

course-record 62 in the final round to pass 11 players and overcome a

five-stroke deficit. He is also a two-time Senior Tour Player of the Year

(1997-1998) and the leading career money winner on the Senior Tour and at

the Toshiba Senior Classic.

Trevino, who also had 29 career titles, will be making his seventh

straight appearance at Newport Beach CC. His PGA Tour career was

highlighted by 27 victories, including two titles at each of three major

championships: The U.S. Open, the British Open and the PGA Championships.

Last year at the Toshiba Senior Classic he was second in the Super

Seniors’ two-day “tournament within the tournament” for the over-60 set,

after losing in a two-hole playoff to George Archer.

Additional player commitments for the 2001 Toshiba Senior Classic

include defending champion Allen Doyle, 2000 Player of the Year Larry

Nelson, 1999 champion Gary McCord, Tom Watson, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Bruce

Fleisher, Tom Kite, Dave Stockton and Lanny Wadkins.

“We’ve assembled what we believe is the best field in our tournament’s

history,” said Tournament Director Jeff Purser, who noted that the six

champions in Toshiba Senior Classic history have won by a cumulative

total of seven strokes.

“We’ve always been fortunate to have highly competitive finishes, and

we hope to see more of the same this year,” said Purser.
