SAILING CLASSES

At-risk students from apartment-based after school centers can learn

to canoe as part of the Nova Community Foundation’s Novaland Sea

Adventures Program from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Boy Scout Sea

Orange Coast College’s School of Sailing and Seamanship will offer a

variety of credit and non-credit public sailing courses mornings,

afternoons, evenings and weekends. Most courses are five weeks long, and

80% of the time is spent sailing on Newport Bay or in the ocean. Courses

range from “Beginning Sailing,” “Ocean Sailing,” “Women’s Cruising” and

Two five-week sailing classes of “Introduction to Shields” will take

place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting Saturday and Sunday at the Orange

seamanship skills, skippering, reefing, right-of-way rules, jibing a

Orange Coast College’s Alaska Eagle, a 65-foot training vessel, will

sail on an eight-day trip from Newport Beach to Cabo San Lucas March

17-24. The trip is designed to introduce sailors to passagemaking while

eight noncredit classes on operating the classic Shields keelboat from 9

a.m. to 1 p.m. on successive Saturdays and Sundays through March and in

May at OCC’s Sailing Center, 1801 W. Coast Highway, Newport Beach. The

class, “Introduction to Shields,” is the transition class from small

boats to 27- to 30-foot keelboats. Students should have a solid grasp of

the basics of dinghy sailing. With an aide on each boat, students will

learn seamanship skills, skippering, reefing, right-of-way rules, jibing

eight noncredit, intermediate-level classes on operating Lido 14 dinghies

from 1:15 to 5 p.m. on successive Saturdays and Sundays through March and

class, “Intermediate Lidos,” should be taken after completion of a

beginning sailing class and is a primer for OCC’s “Introduction to

BOAT RENTALS

Balboa Boat Rentals can put you on the water in many ways, with single

and double kayaks, electric boats, 14-holder sailboats, pedal boats and

Electric boat rentals are available by the hour at Duffy Electric

Boats, 2001 W. Coast Highway, Newport Beach. All boats are equipped with

Streamline center-console fishing boats may be rented at Balboa Boat

Rentals on Balboa Peninsula. The boats, equipped with live bait tanks,

fish-finders and VHF radio, are available by the hour and half-day rates

at $170; full-day rates are $240. U-Drive offshore boats equipped with

VHF radios also may be rented by the hour, half-day or full day. Rates
