I want to thank Richard Luehrs for bringing to the readers’ attention

just how much the business community contributes to our beautiful, clean

and safe city through sales, business license, transient occupancy tax

and property taxes [“Businesses contribute in many ways to community,”

Community Commentary, Feb. 6]. And how they have provided the financial

wherewithal for the many enrichment facilities we all enjoy.

Those of us who don’t have to open the doors for business every day

can continue to contribute by shopping here in our own community. We all

benefit.

The Republicans are in the White House. Get ready for a recession!

[George W.] Bush’s election has evidently spurred a wave of nostalgia

for the old Orange County days of the John Birch Society, with an

outburst against Planned Parenthood and the banning of books. Can

Kristalnacht be far away?
