Mustangs gallop in championship series
The South Huntington Beach Mustangs opened the National Junior
Basketball Division III Championship Series Sunday with a 43-28 victory
over the Westminster Bruins.
Daniel Lee hit some clutch shots in the final period and Eric
Schlesinger and Tyler Sinclair also contributed offensively as the
Mustangs pulled away from the Bruins down the stretch.
The defensive play of Alec Roy and Dan Nakamura created several fast
break opportunities for the Mustangs, who resume playoff action Sunday
(2:45 p.m.) at Edison High.
In Fountain Valley NJB Championship Series action:
DIVISION I
FV Jabberwalkies 57, El Modena Hills 49
Matt Derocili led the Jabberwalkies charge with 20 points and 11
rebounds, Chris Debowski scored 11 points to go along with eight rebounds
and six steals, Sean Gates, Taylor Grosso and Jeff Millard combined for
15 rebounds. Tyler Killian scored seven points with four assists and Ryan
Stehle added six points.
FV Lakers 48, West HB Raptors 28
Alex Le netted 18 points and Viet Nguyen had 16 points for the Lakers
(5-6).
DIVISION II
FV Bruins 53, El Modena Hills 44
The Bruins turned on the defense, led by Jonathan Said and Tyler
Freleaux, to overcome a 12-2 first quarter deficit. Kevin DeHerrera
scored 16 points and had nine rebounds and five assists and Ketan Chopra
had 12 points to lead the Bruins.
FV Knicks 51, Cypress 41
Ben Bofill, Chase Barnes, Tyler Petry and Matt James all scored in
double figures, and Garrett Zurcher, Michael Bird, Jacob Bonham and
Joshua Huang also contributed to the Knicks’ victory.
DIVISION III
FV Lakers 38, Capo/Dana 34
Ryan Sharpe scored eight points and added 12 rebounds, Ray Strazzulla
scored 10 points and added five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
The Laker defense was also stellar, wiping out a 19-10 second quarter
deficit.
SEVENTH-GRADE ALL-NET
FV No. 2 Drops Two
Fountain Valley No. 2 (4-8) dropped two road games last weekend,
falling to Irvine No. 2, 55-43, and South Huntington Beach No. 2, 34-31.
Bryan Bissonette scored 10 points and Sean Carroll added seven in the
Irvine loss.
GIRLS
SEVENTH-GRADE ALL-NET
East HB 37, Fullerton 34
Kelly Parson scored 12 points and Sandy Takata scored eight points to
go along with three steals as the Cheetahs (8-3) combined strong
defensive play with a complete team effort.
