Prep baseball: Mustangs bomb Saddleback
COSTA MESA - Costa Mesa High senior Josh Feldman, who sustained a
season-ending knee injury days before the 2000 opener, started making up
for lost time Friday.
The center fielder and leadoff man belted a pair of home runs and
collected five RBIs to pace the host Mustangs’ 11-0 conquest of Saddleback in the first round of the Foothill-Costa Mesa Tournament.
The win advances Mesa into Tuesday’s championship quarterfinal, when
they will host the winner of Friday’s Santiago-Rancho Alamitos game.
Feldman, who finished 3 for 3 in his varsity debut, was not the only
offensive star for the winners.
Senior Steven Shores, who hit two homers in a standout junior
campaign, nearly matched that total against the Roadrunners. He went 2
for 3 with one homer, a double and two RBIs, but his double was a line
drive off the top of the fence, according to Mesa Coach Kirk
Bauermeister.
Senior Antony Grubisich went 2 for 2 with an RBI to help back a
combined shutout by starter Jeremiah Haubrick and Nick Cabico.
Haubrick, a senior, fanned four, allowed two hits, and did not walk a
batter in three innings to earn the victory.
Cabico struck out two, yielded just one hit, and issued no walks to
finish out the game, which ended after five innings due to the 10-run
mercy rule.
Senior catcher Daniel Hunter doubled, but left the game after being
hit in the face with his own foul tip. Bauermeister said the blow opened
a cut near Hunter’s eye, which began swelling immediately. Bauermeister
said Hunter may need stitches to close the wound.
