Newport Harbor High’s Joe Urban records a career-high 11 strikeouts to lead the Sailors’ baseball team to a 7-2 pool play victory over Laguna
Beach in the Costa Mesa Tournament. Urban also smacks a solo home run to
cap the scoring in the sixth inning. Garrett Nuzum hits a two-run double.
The Costa Mesa High baseball team grabs a 4-2 victory over Century, in
pool play action of the Costa Mesa Tournament. Mustangs’ senior
right-handed pitcher Jeremy Starns strikes out nine batters in a
complete-game victory, while yielding four hits. Mike Adelmund finishes
with two hits and connects for an RBI-double to bring in Tony Arveilos.
Matt Broesamle finishes with a ground-rule double, a sacrifice fly and
two RBIs.
Trailing 7-1 after two innings, the Costa Mesa softball team storms
back for a 13-10 nonleague victory over host Edison. The Mustangs
trailed, 10-3, after three innings. Krissy Genet and Kim Daniels were
perfect from the plate. Genet goes 4 for 4, scoring three runs, while
driving in two and stealing two bases and Daniels is 2 for 2 with one run
scored and one RBI, while stealing two bases.
Costa Mesa’s Matt Peca turns in a brilliant back-row performance to
lead the Mustangs’ boys volleyball team to a 15-11, 15-8, 5-15, 15-13
victory over visiting Saddleback. Peca finishes with 25 digs. Mustang
setters Chris Shanley and Dean Tomkins add 29 and 18 assists,
respectively. Brian Leahy finishes with 15 kills, while Sean Hylton has
13.
The Corona del Mar High baseball team rallies for six runs in the
sixth inning to defeat St. John Bosco, 14-10, in the Newport Elks
Tournament. Reuben Gulledge finishes 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Ryan
Achterberg belts a pinch-hit RBI-single. The Sea Kings collect just seven
hits, including a solo home run shot from Royal McMackin. CdM takes
advantage of 13 walks and four Brave errors.
Looking back, 10 years ago this week.
The Estancia High boys basketball team begins its state championship
run with three huge victories. First, the Eagles take down host Ramona,
84-68. Senior guard Mike Haas hits seven three-pointers en route to a
career-high 32 points as the Eagles shoot 48% from the field. Son Ly
scores 21 points. In the second round, Estancia takes care of host
Servite, 56-47. Matt Fuerbringer leads with 18 points, while Haas and Ly
score 11 points each. The victory over Servite sets up a rematch from the
CIF Southern Section Division III-AA final with Pomona. And, the Eagles
claim revenge with a 64-40 victory to advance to the state championship.
Torrey Hammond steps up with a career-high 20 rebounds and scores 14
points. Ly leads the Eagles with 21 points, Fuerbringer has 16 and Haas
finishes with 11.
Estancia’s Colby French homers down the right-field line in the bottom
of the 10th inning to lead the Eagles’ baseball team to a 3-2 victory
over visiting Corona del Mar. French goes 3 for 5 and scores twice.
Estancia’s Richard Buday has two hits and walks twice. CdM junior
left-hander C.W. Ramsay is at the mound for all 10 innings, pitching out
of jams in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Brady Lamar has
four stolen bases for the Sea Kings.
CdM catcher Tim DeCinces leads the Sea Kings’ 13-hit attack to a 13-7
victory over Costa Mesa. DeCinces slams a solo home run and a double,
scoring twice to give CdM its first victory of the season.
The Costa Mesa girls basketball team is stunned as Santana pulls off a
70-62 victory in the first round of the Southern California Division III
state playoffs. Mustangs sophomore sensation Olivia DiCamilli scores a
game-high 35 points. Mesa finishes 9 of 24 from the free-throw line.
