Boys and girls swimming: Mesa girls win third straight

TUSTIN - The Costa Mesa High girls swimming team built an 84-72

lead before the last relay and held on for its third straight victory, an

86-84 nonleague win over host Tustin Wednesday.

The Mustang boys lost, 134-23, but Mike Whitman sparked the squad that

had five swimmers competING.

For the Mesa girls (3-0), junior Sarah Douglas, seniors Wendy and Jody

Martinovich and Erin Bayes teamed to win the 200-yard medley relay in

2:03.76. Jody Martinovich also grabbed first in the 200 individual medley

race and 500 freestyle. Bayes won first in the 50 and 100 free. The

Martinovich twins, Bayes and junior Shirley Peng took first in the 50

free relay.

Whitman won first in the 200 IM in 2:13.33 and he also finished in

second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.64. Mustangs Brian Tipton, Steven

Reyes, Whitman and Chasen Marshall finished third in the 200 medley relay

in 2:07.23.
