COSTA MESA - Cheri Smith spun a two-hitter and her Vanguard

University teammates struck for three runs in the second inning as the

Lions posted a 3-0 victory over visiting Dominican University of Illinois

Wednesday in Game 1 of a nonconference softball doubleheader.

Freshman Jenny Willis followed that up with a four-hitter as Vanguard

posted a 3-1 victory in the nightcap to improve to 12-6 overall.

Rachel Rolle and Jill Jessen each had two hits for Vanguard in Game 1,

and Jessen was 2 for 3 in Game 2.
