Huntington Beach resident Elizabeth Thomson has been placed on the

dean’s list for fall 2000 at UCLA . . . Marine Corps Pvt. Gilbert S.

Garcia completed basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San

Diego. He completed 122 weeks of training designed to challenge new

marine recruits both physically and mentally. He is the son of Gilbert C.

Garcia of Huntington Beach . . . Army Reserve Pvt. Harvey H. Herela of

Huntington Beach graduated from the petroleum supply specialists advanced

individual training course at Fort Lee in Petersburg, Va. He received

instruction in receipt, storage, issue, shipping and distribution of

petroleum and oil used by the Army. He is the son of Carlos A. and Ana

Maria Herela of Huntington Beach . . . Air Force Col. Mark D. Stephen has

arrived for duty at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, N.M. He is

the director of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Directed Energy Laser

Division. He is the son of John G. and Julia A. Stephen of Fountain

Valley . . . Edison High School students Pamela Bassaline, Leyna Belcher,

Christie Erwin, Christopher Patton, Jenna Reed, Justin White and teacher

Bruce Belcher participated in the Close Up Foundation Washington, D.C.

government studies program March 4-10. They visited Capitol Hill and met

and questioned Washington insiders including congressional leaders,

political advisors and journalists.
