Two Huntington Beach groups won prizes in the “Dr. Seuss-Style” story

writing contest sponsored by Time Warner Communications and Borders Books

and Music.

The winners in the second annual contest came from Smith Elementary

and Mesa View Middle schools.

In the kindergarten through third grade category, a first grade class

at Smith School won for its story, “The Skunkle” which was based on its

misadventures with a skunk.

Sixth-graders Molly Lytle, Christina Jakymiw and Selby Werner of Mesa

View took the prize in the grade four to six category for their story

“Oh, The Places We’ll Go!”

The contest was developed in support of the National Educational

Assn.’s Read Across America project, emphasizing the importance of

reading and literacy in schools.

Nearly 100 stories from local schools were entered in this year’s

contest, compared to last year’s 12. Entries were judged on content,

creativity and the story’s lesson and overall impression.

The winning classrooms will receive a private assembly with The

Creature Teacher, a mobile zoo featuring live reptiles and mammals.
