JIM DE BOOM -- Community & Clubs
1,800 MENTORS NEEDED: The response to the drive for mentors for 2,001
kindergarten through third-graders at Pomona, Whittier and Wilson
elementary schools has been strong, but we still need 1,800 mentors if we
are going to help all of these children to learn to read. If you, the
Daily Pilot reader, don’t volunteer one hour a week between now and June
15th, who will?
To volunteer or to find out more information about mentoring call:
Pomona Elementary School, Jill McWhertor, literacy leader, (949)
515-6980; Whittier Elementary School, Sarah Markel, HOSTS program
director, (949) 515-6898; or Wilson Elementary School, Pam Eastman,
literacy leader, (949) 515-6995. Or mentor at the new Shalimar Learning
Center at the Soup Kitchen by calling (949) 646-0396.
SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES HONORED: The Exchange Club of the Orange Coast
held its annual Crime Prevention Day by honoring several Orange County
Sheriff’s Department employees, including Deputy Dave Berry, Patrol
Deputy of the Year; John Tsivgadellis, Professional Staff Employee of the
Year; Rick Koviades, Harbor Patrol Deputy of the Year; Sgt. Jim Rudy,
Supervisor of the Year; and Ray Guerrero, Deputy of the Year. Chairman
Jack Wilder presented those honored with plaques from the club,
Supervisor Tom Wilson presented resolutions from the Board of
Supervisors. Harbor Department Capt. Marty Kasules and Assistant Sheriff
Rocky Hewitt shared the job of introducing those honored. “Outstanding
recipients -- great program!” states Ed Kohlmeier, club president.
SILVER BEAVER AWARDS: The Boy Scouts of America, Orange County
Council, presented Silver Beaver Awards to Costa Mesa residents Robert
Dressler and Rod Gamble, as well as Corona del Mar resident Scott Jones,
at an awards dinner attended by about 400 Orange County residents. The
Silver Beaver Award is given by the National Council of Boy Scouts of
America, upon the recommendation by the local council, to people who have
given outstanding service to youth over an extended period of time.
All of the honorees have been active in scouts for a number of years,
as well as numerous other community and church groups. Congratulations!
PRINTER PURCHASED: Syd Lucas presented, on behalf of the Newport
Beach Sunrise Rotary Club, a check in the amount of $1,455 to Carole
Castaldo, principal of the Alternative Education Center and Monte Vista
High School, for the purchase of an HP 450 laser printer to be used with
10 Macintosh computers on campus. The Rotary Club for a number of years
has supported the Alternative Education Center with funds, members’ time
for tutoring, scholarships for graduating seniors and educational
computer programs.
ARBOR DAY TRADITION: Members of the Newport Balboa Rotary Club,
joined by members of the South Coast Metro Rotary Club, continued a
33-year community tradition this week as they distributed 2,200 Aleppo
pine saplings to third-graders attending public and private schools in
Costa Mesa and Newport Beach in celebration of Arbor Day, an American
tradition since 1884. The Aleppo pine, native to the Mediterranean, is
resistant to droughts and is a fast-growing tree that will top out at 60
feet.
According to the club’s president, Wendell Sawyer, the total number of
trees distributed to third-graders over the past 32 years numbers more
than 93,300. “This was an event begun by our member and then-club
president, Tom Riley [the late Orange County supervisor], 33 years ago,
which has contributed a lot to the greening of the harbor area,” Sawyer
said.
Several dozen club members spent Sunday at Hines Nursery cutting the
excess roots that creep out of plastic containers the trees come in. This
week, club members went to 29 schools and visited third-grade classrooms,
leaving a tree for each student and discussing how to plant and nurture
the tree, said Rotarian Peter Smith, who chairs the Arbor Day program.
“The trees will be planted at the students’ homes, in the ground or in
containers,” Smith said.
A special 15-gallon palm tree, donated by the city of Newport Beach
tree supplier, was planted by the Rotary Club at Newport Elementary
School on Friday with Supt. Robert Barbot, several school board members
and City Manager Homer Bludau in attendance.
