Prep soccer: 10 locals All-CIF
Barry Faulkner
CERRITOS - The list of 10 Newport-Mesa players named to the All-CIF
Southern Section boys and girls soccer teams includes four first-team
honorees.
Corona del Mar High seniors Britta Vogele and Molly O’Meara, as well
as sophomore teammate Elisha Morgan, are first-team honorees among the
Division IV girls coaches’ selections, while Costa Mesa senior Trinidad
Hernandez is a first-team choice by the Division IV boys coaches.
CdM’s Allison Harvey and Costa Mesa’s Katie Roche are second-team
girls picks in Division IV, the same Division Costa Mesa’s Stephen Thomas
was named to the second team for his work with the Mustangs boys squad.
Newport Harbor sophomore Amy Burlingham is a second-team choice in
Division II, while CdM sophomores Paige Janes and Lauren Shepherdson are
third-team picks among girls Division IV honorees.
Vogele, a four-year starter in goal for the Sea Kings, helped Coach
Ron Evans’ squad reach the CIF Division IV semifinals, where it fell in
overtime to Harvard-Westlake, 2-1, to finish 26-2-3.
With the University of Iowa-bound keeper making highlight-reel saves,
the Sea Kings posted 15 shutouts. Vogele earned first-team all-league
honors each of her four varsity seasons.
O’Meara, the CdM sweeper, was a dominant force on a dominant back
line. Her physical presence helped limit opposing teams to just 19 goals
in 31 games and she scored two goals in the playoffs, including the lone
tally against Harvard-Westlake. She was MVP of the Pacific Coast League
as a junior and was a first-team All-PCL choice as a senior.
Morgan, a sophomore midfielder, repeats as a first-team All-CIF
selection. She helped the Sea Kings hold the ball-control advantage
against virtually every opponent. She was first-team All-PCL as well and
had two playoff goals.
Hernandez was the scoring leader for first-year Coach Eugene Day’s
Pacific Coast League champions. It was the first league title in school
history for Mesa, which lost in the second round of the Division IV
playoffs to Bishop Montgomery, to finish 14-6-1. He shared PCL MVP honors
in a breakthrough senior campaign.
Harvey, a junior forward, was limited by a knee injury in the
playoffs, but scored a team-high 25 goals in the regular season. A
first-team All-CIF selection as a sophomore, she shared PCL MVP laurels
this year with Roche.
Roche, a senior sweeper, helped the Mustangs post a 14-5-6 record. Her
steady play all four years at Mesa helped Coach Dan Johnston’s team
progress into a perennial postseason participant.
Janes, a sophomore fullback, typically marked the opponents’ most
dangerous forward and did not allow her target to score all season. She
was also a first-team All-PCL performer.
Shepherdson, a sophomore who spent time at midfield as well as up
front, helped CdM outscore its opponents a combined 108-19. With
Shepherdson making plays, the Sea Kings earned the Division IV’s top seed
and entered the semifinal with a 26-game unbeaten streak. She scored
twice in the playoffs, after earning second-team All-PCL recognition.
Burlingham, a sophomore forward, was the leading scorer for the
Sailors, whom she led to the CIF Division II playoffs as the Sea View
League’s third-place entry. Burlingham’s explosive speed up front, helped
Newport earn the school’s first two playoff victories in its first
postseason appearance since 1994. The Sailors fell to Edison in the
second round to finish 12-7-4. She was a first-team All-Sea View League
selection.
Thomas was a junior defender and a first-team All-PCL honoree for the
Mustangs.
